A proposal to use an area of land in Helston as a site for a country fair will be discussed at a special meeting next week.

The meeting will be held at the Inn and Still on May 16 at 5.30pm for anyone interested in planning, attending, or helping set up a country fair on the land at Hospital Cross in Helston.

The site had been at the centre of a controversial plan for a retail park to be built, however in 2023 the plans were refused.

Parsonage Developments Ltd had applied for permission to develop a 2.7-hectare greenfield site at Hospital Cross, between the Sainsbury’s supermarket and Flambards Theme Park, to include an Aldi, McDonald's and Costa, with drive-thrus for the latter two.

However, in 2023 a decision was made under delegated powers by an officer at Cornwall Council to refuse planning permission on the grounds that it would have had an unacceptable impact on the character and appearance of the area.

Now that the land won't be developed commercially, organisers propose an event to allow the community to appreciate the area of land.

A spokesperson behind the project said: “The intention is to hold an event which was the health of our environment and our community at its heart, linking our town and its surrounding countryside.

“Ideas so far are to celebrate rural crafts, organise family fun activities, and invite local groups and organisations to promote their work.

“Local producers, makers, performers, and artists can all play a part in making it a lively occasion for all to enjoy.”
