After being closed for more than four months the Meudon Hotel at Mawnan Smith is preparing to unveil its new look to the world.

Since closing in October the public areas have been undergoing a major refit – in particular the restaurant and lounge.

In both the old fashioned carpet has been removed to reveal the 40mm thick original Columbian pine wood flooring, while wallpaper has been stripped and the fresh paint added in its place.

It is the latest stage in the hotel’s transition into the 21st century.

Gaye Woods, part owner with the other Pilgrim family members, told the Packet: “It is still the same family, the same feel and the same personnel – just 2013 style. It’s a rolling programme of investment – and we have invested a massive chunk for this.”

The wooden floor means in the restaurant means the hotel can now host dances and entertainment for the first time.

This has led to an influx of wedding bookings, with Gaye adding: “We have got more booked in this year than we have probably done in the last ten years.”

The lounge has been renamed the Rosemullion Bar and now includes a specially created bar, while the smaller ex bar area will be turned into a snug.

“We have tried to keep the Edwardian theme, so although it’s fresh it belongs to the house,” said Gaye.

The vintage lights and colouring remains, but with new Queen Anne sofas and other pieces of furniture, with just a couple of the original pieces recovered.

Upstairs the steady refurbishment of the bedrooms continue, following on from work carried out when ‘Hotel Inspector’ Alex Polizzi visited with her Channel 5 TV programme.

The former “executive rooms” have been renamed Cove rooms and have been freshened up with modern interiors.

By the time the hotel reopens to the public on March 1 between eight and ten bedrooms will have been revamped and the owners plan a rolling programme, where they continue to refurbish two a month until all 29 have been completed.
