Six directors are being sought for the newly incorporated Falmouth First Community Interest Company which has been established to undertake projects and activities within the town.

The CIC is in line to manage the buildings and run events on Prince of Wales Pier after it was the only group to respond to an invite for tenders from Cornwall Council. A draft licence between the two has been agreed.

Four interim directors, David Pollard, Chris Smith, Jonathan Griffin and Tim Light, have been at the helm while the CIC was established and have been supported by a steering group.

Applications from people wishing to be considered as a permanent directors are now available. The steering group will continue and will feed ideas through to the new directors who will have the final say.

Speaking at a recent meeting of the CIC steering group, Councillor Mike Varney said: “We have so many people all working for the town, we are looking for some of those people to come on board as directors. I won’t be a director of the CIC and next month’s meeting is my last here.”

Explaining why councillors will not be considered as directors, he added: “If we have no councillors on the CIC it means we are open to anything, funding-wise. As soon as we have a councillor there, there is certain grant funding we cannot apply for. Councillors can be on the steering group and still represent their community by feeding in their ideas.”

There has been some conflict between the CIC and Falmouth Town Council, who have accused it of having “hidden agendas,” but the steering group has once again appealed for councillors to get involved.

“We must send the town council our minutes and keep sending them an invite to come along,” said Mr Varney. “The CIC is going to benefit the whole town and the whole of the community. Collectively we are going to work together and deliver something that will be here forever and a day.”
