Butchers from Cornwall have landed leading honours in the 2015 Butchers Q Guild Smithfield Awards, the annual product evaluation event, open to the Guild’s 110 members nationwide.
Brian Etherington Meat Co, of Scorrier, picked up a brace of gold awards for its Wheal Rose Sausages and Wheal Rose Hogs Pudding. The business is also home to Etherington’s Farm Shop and Etherington’s Butchers Academy.
Tara O’Donnell, of Etherington Farm Shop, said: “These are long standing items and our top sellers. Our hogs pudding we sell to local restaurants, hotels and cafes as well as in our farm shop. It is made up of pork and boiled in hogs’ casings .The pork is locally sourced from Perranwell which is within a ten mile radius.
“Our Wheal Rose sausages are made up of pork, rusk, water and flavourings. Again our pork is locally sourced and these are our bestselling sausage for wholesale and retail.
“We have been training three apprentices this year in our wholesale and retail side as well as putting in a state of the art cooks’ kitchen so that we can develop our cooked meat side. As the butchers are so well trained it can be any butcher that makes these products.”
