A Falmouth pub which underwent a complete transformation when new owners took over last year, has been nominated for a prestigious award only five months after it opened its doors.

Famed for its harbour views, the Star and Garter in High Street re-opened in August after extensive refurbishment. New owners Elliot and Becca Thompson set out to put their waterside pub on the foodie map. So they’re delighted that the Star and Garter has reached the finals of Food Magazine’s Reader Awards for Best Foodie Pub.

After sifting through over 110,000 reader votes in 13 categories and two rounds of voting, Food Magazine will reveal the winners at an awards ceremony in Somerset on Monday, January 25. The Star and Garter team are thrilled to be in the running alongside such big names as Hugh Fearnley- Whittingstall and Rick Stein.

Elliot said: “We’re over the moon to have been nominated- and now we’re in the final three we couldn’t be more proud of the team.”

Head chef Andi Richardson added:“It’s amazing news. "We’ve really put the hours in since launching in August and it’s great that our hard work has paid off… so far.”

Andi is just one of a talented trio of young chefs who are making a name for the Star and Garter. He worked with Adam Banks and Stephen Knowles at Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen Cornwall, where the three developed their talent for creating exciting dishes with a modern Mediterranean flavour, changing the menu every day to include fresh local fish, seasonal game, tempting puddings and Sunday roasts.

As well as sourcing their produce from the best and freshest that Cornwall has to offer, one of the Star and Garter’s unique foodie features is their butchery. “We love butchering meats ourselves,” said Andi. “ We apply a nose-to-tail philosophy so everything gets used.”

The team will soon find out if they have won their category. “We’d love to win,” said Andi, “but either way we’re going to continue working hard, loving what we do -and doing what we do best.”
