Falmouth's MP Sarah Newton visited the Swanvale development site recently to see for herself the new homes which are being currently being built for the town.

Swanvale is situated on a former brownfield Ministry of Defence fuel depot facility which historically provided military fuel to RAF St Mawgan and the port of Falmouth port. Before building could begin, decommissioned, reinforced steel fuel tanks measuring 37 meters in diameter with a capacity of 6,000 cubic metres, had to be removed. The tanks were painstakingly demolished with the waste steel being recycled and the concrete crushed and used in the construction of the site’s roads.

The development currently employs around 50 people as well as four apprentices. Being built by Wainhomes, Swanvale will provide over 250 new homes, of which over 50 will be for affordable sale and over 30 for affordable rent.

NHBC regional director for South West, Jim Lyons, said: “We were delighted to show Sarah Newton around the Swanvale development. It is a prime example of the high standards and quality house builders like Wainhomes are delivering. Swanvale is playing an important role in providing much needed new homes in the South West."

Mrs Newton said: “Despite the drizzle, it was great to visit people working on the new homes and pathways at Swanvale as well as local people who have already moved into their new homes. There are a range of schemes available that enable local people to afford to own a good quality home of their own.

"I was also pleased to learn that local school children had been involved with choosing the new road names - I would never have guessed that Rosva Morgawr means sea giant.”

Bob Taylor, managing director of Wainhomes South West, added: “Swanvale is a great example of a quality development on a brownfield site that is helping to meet local housing need. And because our homes are so energy efficient they reduce CO2 emissions and cut down on energy costs.”
