Around 25 local tradesmen are currently working on McCarthy and Stone's redevelopment of the site of the former Admiral Nelson pub in Falmouth and a further 60 jobs are likely to be created in the coming months.

Led by site manager Pete Smith, McCarthy and Stone have invested heavily in the local workforce. Since work began on the development, called Trelawny House, earlier this year, around 25 local tradesmen have been taken on, including brick layers, scaffolders, and banksmen, and it is estimated that as the site continues to progress, a further 60 jobs in areas such as plumbing, electrics and tiling will follow.

Mr Smith said: “McCarthy and Stone’s commitment to sourcing its tradesmen from the local work pool provides a welcome boost to the Falmouth and the wider community of south Cornwall. Trelawny House is still in its infancy but we’ve already had a number of local contractors working across the site.

“Our banksman and crane driver, for instance, were taken on in August of last year, both of which are from the Falmouth area. The importance of employing local workforces cannot be underestimated and as Trelawny House continues to progress we will be looking to recruit more skilled tradesmen from the surrounding areas.

Trelawny House has been designed to appeal exclusively to those over 55, and will be made up of 46, one and two bedroom apartments.

Debby Pavitt, regional sales and marketing director at McCarthy and Stone South West, said: “Even at this early stage the development has received significant interest from local retirees keen to stay in the local area, but also retirees looking to downsize from further field who are attracted by Falmouth’s beautiful sea-side location and beaches."
