A computer services company has doubled in size less than two years after relocating to the Tremough Innovation Centre (TIC) in Penryn and has plans for further expansion.

Gylly Computer Services joined the 40 companies based at the (TIC) in January 2015, hoping the award-winning business acceleration centre operated by Plymouth University on behalf of Cornwall Council would enable the fledgling firm to grow.

Less than two years on, Gylly has already doubled its workforce, hiring two new engineers to join the husband and wife team who started the firm, and plans to further its offering to the hospitality sector, potentially creating more new high-value jobs for Cornwall in the process.

Ian Mitchell, founder and managing director, said: “Tremough Innovation Centre gave me a good working environment with all the support I needed to grow and develop the business. We certainly wouldn’t have grown this quickly without being based at TIC; relocating to the centre has helped towards our success, and it’s somewhere I’d recommend young businesses in Cornwall to consider if they want to grow quickly.”

Ian founded Gylly Computer Services in 2011 following a 15 year career working as an IT technician for Cornwall Council and Cornwall Fire and Rescue Services. After a restructuring at the authority, he decided to leave and start his own business. His wife Sophie began helping with the accounts and is now the financial director. The business provides IT solutions to businesses, schools and homes throughout the South West, offering a one-stop shop for all technical requirements.

Ian added: “The business has grown a lot very quickly and we’ve now recruited two engineers. Our primary focus for the future is about developing our service for the hospitality sector; we’re already looking after two major hotels in Falmouth, and we are looking to expand into that field more.”

Tremough opened in 2012 and is one of three Cornwall Innovation Centres based in Penryn, Pool and Truro which provide tangible support to growth-hungry businesses to help them innovate and grow at a faster rate, with companies also benefiting from prime networking and support opportunities on site.

Specialising in supporting businesses in the creative, media and environmental science sectors, TIC has helped companies based at the centre to enjoy record annual growth of up to 40 per cent in one year thanks to the dedicated business support available on site.
