Now in its fourth year, Falmouth-based clothing brand, Seasalt, is offering another enviable opportunity to train and study as a potter at the world renowned Leach Pottery in St Ives as part of their Seasalt Bursary.

The bursary forms part of the company's pioneering, new campaign, Modern Creatives, which supports creativity in the community and helps keep Cornwall’s rich heritage and creativity alive.

Libby Buckley, Leach Pottery director, said: “It’s a fantastic opportunity for us to train a highly skilled potter in the Leach tradition which links back to Bill Marshall - the original apprentice in 1938. We’re incredibly grateful to Seasalt for part-funding the apprenticeship scheme and providing this opportunity.”

Following a search that saw applications from as far afield as Spain and the USA, the Leach Pottery appointed their second Seasalt apprentice, Matt Foster. He said: “This is an unbelievable opportunity and has given me the chance to do something that gives me satisfaction and that I enjoy as a job.”

Founded in 1920 by Bernard Leach and Japanese artist, Shoji Hamada, the Leach Pottery is now a UK charity. Alongside promoting the work and life of Bernard Leach, it also works to further the development of studio pottery and encourage young talent through its studio and education programme.

Seasalt co-founder and chairman, Neil Chadwick, said: “We’ve always loved and been inspired by St Ives and its artistic heritage. We’ve been involved with the Leach to some degree for many years and we’re looking forward to welcoming the next Seasalt apprentice.”

Applications for the 24 month placement at foundation level are now invited. The Leach Pottery is looking for someone who is practical, enthusiastic and has natural creative flair. No previous ceramics experience is necessary. The new apprenticeship will begin in October.

The Seasalt Bursary is providing the funding towards the establishment of this position on an annual basis.
