TWELVE randan boats, seven skiffs and five working boats took part in the annual Easter Monday handicap race from St Anthony in Gillan Creek to Helford Village.

The choppy conditions round the Dennis favoured the working boats, which took the first four places. First home in a time of 27 minutes were last year's winners: Steve Allen, David Muirhead and Jan Wilkin in Persevere.

In second place came Megasaurus, crewed by three generations: May Holyer (14), his father David and grandfather, Frank Care - a remarkable performance.

Third place went to the ladies of Penryn rowing club: Gwen Christian, Bev Davis and Kris Jane, rowing Sunset.

The first skiff home was crewed by Michael White, Bro Diplock and Nathaniel Rothwell, who had made the long trip down from Rock to take part.

Charles and Maria Herbert provided welcome refreshments for the crews at the Shipwrights Arms after the race.

Maria presented the Bell Collins Shield to the winning crew.

Jan Morgan was thanked by all for his usual efficient management and handicapping.
