CONCEDING soft goals and missing your own clear-cut chances is always a recipe for defeat and so it proved for Wendron United after they were beaten 3-2 by Camelford in division one West of the Carlsberg SW Peninsula League.
With Sean Johnston, Jeff Till, Steve Hodson, David Toy and Scott Toy all missing from the squad, United had to rearrange their line-up with Gary Pascoe and Pete Maclean moving into midfield and Adam Williamson and Matt George filling in at the back.
Also missing from the squad for a number of weeks has been Andy Munro, but he has been forced to retire on medical advice following a troublesome injury.
On the plus side was the availability of striker Mike O'Neill and he made his presence felt with a couple of good goals. Craig Martin was also available for a rare game.
On a ground that offered little respite from the strong winds, Camelford got off to the perfect start with a goal after just six minutes when Andy Boxall forced a corner. The ball hung up in the wind before it was knocked wide and crossed back in for Peter Hopper to drill his shot into the net past goalkeeper Bryan Scoffin.
Wendron got back on level terms in the 15th minute when Justin Searle earned his side a corner following a shot that the 'keeper Joe Tickle did well to turn round the post. Mike Newberry flicked on Gary Pascoe's cross and O'Neill pounced to rifle his shot into the net.
With Pat Shaughnessy and Justin Searle causing problems in midfield Glyn Hobbs and O'Neill were always a constant threat and four minutes before the break O'Neill ran on to Shaughnessy's pass and brushed past defenders before drilling a fine shot into the corner of the net to give Tickle no chance.
Tickle came to his side's rescue right on the half-time whistle when Searle split the home defence for O'Neill to fire in a shot that that 'keeper brilliantly finger-tipped away for a corner.
The second half had barely got under way when Camelford were back on level terms after a long punt out by the goalkeeper. Scoffin tried to gather with one hand, but succeeded only in diverting it into the path of Karl Spillane who crossed for Paul Menhennick to score.
Five minutes later the home side nudged in front when Boxall cut in and on a flat run across the edge of the box thumped his shot into the corner of the net.
Wendron were still attempting to shrug off the third goal when Camelford struck with a fourth when Boxhall worked a one-two and hit a shot from an acute angle that Scoffin kept out, but it fell into the path of Boxall who slammed it into the net.
The setback finally spurred Wendron into action with Shaughnessy and Searle regaining control in midfield and Hobbs and O'Neill starting to threaten up front.
Hobbs got clear and with just the 'keeper to beat shot wide, but United pulled a goal back when Searle got on the end of Shaughnessy's pass and crossed into the box. O'Neill's challenge was enough to distract Tickle and the defenders and the ball fell to Tom Bartlett who executed a perfect chip shot into the corner of the net.
Mike Newberry had a fleeting chance to score, but couldn't get the ball from under his feet and Bartlett put his shot the wrong side of the upright following a diagonal pass from O'Neill.
United pressed during the last few minutes, but Searle blasted his shot at the 'keeper from close range as the visitors were unable to get the goal their play deserved.
Manager Steve Webber said it was a game Wendron could have won: "Football is all about taking your chances and not conceding soft goals, but that's what we did today and that's why we have lost and not won.
"We created some very, very good chances and were a little bit wasteful, but at the other end we also contributed to our own downfall.
"Generally, defences are on top in games, but this was the complete opposite with neither defence on top of anything at all.
"Of course, we were yet again without a number of leading players and that has an effect, but you have what you got and you get on with it.
"We should have finished them off in the final 20 minutes, but we were unable to do so and therefore did not get at least the one point we deserved from the game."
