TRURO City lifted the first leg of a Jolly's Combination League double when they won the league cup after defeating Helston 4-1 in the final at Porthleven on Easter Sunday.

It was City's tenth win in 12 finals.

Playing with a gale-force wind behind them in the first half, City took the lead inside 90 seconds and that set the pattern for the first half. Two down at half-time, Helston needed a quick response in the second half to put pressure on City, but it never came as the White Tigers doubled their score before the Blues snatched a late goal.

The game had barely got under way when Helston manager and goalkeeper Symon Winnan had to pick the ball out of the net. Sam Matthews made a darting run inside and fed the ball to Jonny Ludlam and his first-time left-foot chip shot was executed to perfection as it dipped into the far corner of the goal.

Helston found it difficult to get out of their own half as City pushed forward and they opened up the Blues defence again but Justin Harrington volleyed wide from a cross by Lewis Reed.

Liam Eddy became the first player to be cautioned by referee Colin Spence after a rash challenge on Danny Harris in the 19th minute.

Helston didn't help themselves by showing a lack of composure at the back when in possession but not under any real pressure. As a result, poor goalkicks, mistimed clearances, and equally poor passing meant they invited yet more pressure.

Matthews had a great chance to grab a second goal for City when Ludlam's corner broke out wide to him, but after cutting in he blasted his shot high and wide.

On the half hour City snapped up a second goal when Harrington's corner was allowed to go unchecked and that left Shane Tolley with the simple task of knocking the ball into the net from close range.

Helston's first shot of any note came in the 32nd from Eddy, but it lacked any real fizz to trouble John Vaughan. Dominic Pullen had a little bit of trouble, however, when he was booked for a poor challenge on Ludlam.

Minutes later skipper Graham Blake's name had also been noted, but there was some joy for Helston five minutes from half time when Kayne Trevaskis, who worked hard to hold up the ball under pressure, slipped a great pass inside for Eddy to run on to and cross to Pullen who hit his first-time shot well wide of the target.

Trevaskis was at it again right on half-time when Eddy was again put in on a run, but his shot was deflected for a corner.

Helston, with Phil Black surprisingly substituted at half-time following a sound first half performance, needed an early goal to upset City's rhythm, but it was City who almost scored in the first minute when Ludlam, Tolley and Matthews combined for a move that saw Winnan hold on to the final shot.

Another good move by Helston saw Eddy on a good run and feeding the ball inside to Trevaskis to set up Miles, but he hit his shot over the bar.

Charlie Davis found Trevaskis with a good pass as he cut into the box, but with the shot looking more inviting he chose instead to pass and the opportunity was lost.

City missed a good chance to put the tie out of reach when Dan Richardson picked out Ludlam from Matthews pass, but he steered his shot the wrong side of the post.

A goal did come in the 64th minute when Miles brought down Matthews. It was not a good move with Justin Harrington prowling around waiting for the right opportunity and so it proved as he hit the ball over the wall and into the net before Winnan could move.

There was a slight moment of panic for City when Trevaskis hooked the ball in for Pullen to run on to, but Vaughan raced out of his goal to clear in the nick of time.

If it wasn't quite all over it was in the 73rd minute when Richardson collected Matthews pass and knocked his cross into the box. Sharkey failed to clear and Jamie Skinner arrived on the scene to steer the ball left-footed into the far corner of the net.

A minute later Skinner was extremely fortunate not to be cautioned for a wild challenge on Miles. The free kick led to Pullen getting in a header and strong appeals by Helston for a penalty for handball, but the referee was unmoved.

Matthews had a real chance to add another goal in the 77th minute when he raced clear with Neil Rollinson in pursuit. Winnan came out to cut down his space and that gave Rollinson just enough time to make a great tackle and rescue the situation.

Skinner became the only City player to be booked nine minutes from time for a foul on Bryan Hawke.

Six minutes from time Helston pulled a goal back when Vaughan punched away Pullen's corner. Miles drilled the ball back against the crossbar, but Trevaskis reacted smartly to head in the rebound.

Both sides could have had late goals with Eddy curling his shot just past the far post and Steve Rowson's header beating Winnan but not Sharkey who cleared it off the line.

Nigel Jolly presented the trophy and plaques to the players and officials after the final.
