Spot on Burr rescues Port

CLOSE SHAVE: Penzance's defence is stretched as they survive another assault on their goal by Porthleven

PENZANCE 1 PORTHLEVEN 1 A PENALTY by Jamie Burr five minutes into injury time rescued a precious Carlsberg SW Peninsula League division one West point for Porthleven after they looked destined for defeat against Penzance at Penlee Park.

On a windswept and bumpy pitch it was never going to be a great footballing contest and so it proved as the players produced exactly the sort of performance expected of them.

The Magpies elected for route one whilst Porthleven relied on their passing game. Unfortunately, of the two teams, Port came off second best in the tactical battle as their passing for the entire 90 minutes was well below par and looked a pale shadow of the side that had won at Liskeard just a few days earlier.

Luke Payne continued in goal and gave yet another impressive performance with sound goalkeeping and some stunning saves.

Port might have taken the lead in the opening minute when Glenn Rogers hit a great shot which goalkeeper Craig Nicholls fumbled, but fortunately for him he fumbled it enough to turn it round the post for a corner.

Mike Davies' corner was headed behind by Andy Westgarth and then another chance fell to Glenn Rogers who put his shot just wide of the target.

Penzance hit back with a few efforts of their own with Steve Hancock firing over the bar and Stuart Reynolds shooting wide while a Nick Pugliese free kick brought a fine save from Payne.

The home side were enjoying a good spell of possession and in the 17th minute they took the lead when Davies was caught out of position which gave Liam Bennetts space and time to pull the ball back across the box for Liam Devine to shoot into the corner of the net.

As the half unfolded so each side conceded a series of free kicks that gave the game a stop-start nature, but Penzance were fortunate when Mark Hollands' free kick struck the post and was cleared to safety by Darren Holsey.

Five minutes before the break Porthleven felt they should have had a penalty when Nicholls impeded Kevin Lawrence, but the referee surprisingly awarded an indirect free kick from which Steve Warr shot wide from Hollands' pass.

Free kicks were still the order of the day as they began to mount, but at half-time a lacklustre Port still trailed Penzance.

Port began the second half much better and James Miller went close with an early effort, but on the hour Davies was replaced by Scott Rogers in a bid to pep up the attack.

A half chance fell to Glenn Rogers when he got on the end of a cross by Jamie Burr, but he headed behind when he should have done much better.

Scott Rogers had his chance ten minutes later when Hollands delivered a perfect corner, but with an open goal he somehow contrived to miss the target.

Penzance had a great chance to tighten their grip on the game in the 72nd minute when Street was put away, but with just Payne to beat he shot straight at the goalkeeper.

Steve Brewer came on for Hollands with 15 minutes to go, but it was Penzance who still looked the more threatening with Devine having his shot pushed away by Payne.

Within a minute Payne came to Port's rescue again with a stunning save when he brilliantly tipped away a Jack Liddicoat's shot that was destined for the top corner.

Scott Rogers looked as if he had missed with Port's final chance when his header sailed over the bar when well placed, but in the 94th minute Hugh Howlett's goalbound effort was handled on the line by Gavin Edwards.

Edwards protested his innocence, the referee just brandished a red card and Jamie Burr blasted the ball into the net from the penalty to grab a dramatic equaliser.

Porthleven deserved the point, but they certainly left it late to secure it.

On Saturday Port entertain Penryn Athletic, kick off 2.45 pm.

Porthleven: L Payne, M Holland, M Davies, H Howlett, J Miller, J Burr, N Thwaites, S Warr, A Westgarth, G Rogers, K Lawrence. Subs: S Rogers, S Brewer, M Fox.

LISKEARD ATHLETIC 0 PORTHLEVEN 2 Away to Liskeard Athletic in the quarter-finals of the Durning Lawrence Cornwall Charity Cup, Porthleven pulled off the shock result of the round with a 2-0 win.

In the first half the game was more of a midfield battle with neither side looking like getting the better of the other, but half way through the second half Payne kept Port in the game when diving full length to get his fingertips to a shot from Alexander.

It wasn't until 15 minutes from time that Porthleven took the lead when Matt Fox scored from close range from Mark Hollands' cross.

Five minutes from time Port assured themselves of an upset when Mike Davies' corner was headed on for Fox to have a simple tap in to score.

Porthleven: L Payne, M Holland, M Davies, H Howlett, M Fox, J Burr, N Thwaites, S Warr, A Westgarth, G Rogers, K Lawrence. Subs: S Rogers, S Brewer, D Herring.
