Stroke of good fortune for Falmouth Art Gallery

It's all change at Falmouth Art Gallery as the hugely successful Winifred Freeman exhibition makes way for a display from the gallery's permanent collection.

Featuring in the display is the gallery's most recent acquisition Morvah - Sea Figure, Sail Loft Series by St Ives artist Clare Wardman.

The work is part of a series of 100 observational paintings inspired by the multiple views from her studio window.

Ms Wardman said: "Falmouth Art Gallery has an enviable national reputation for its rich art collection and commitment to education. I consider it a privilege to be included in such an important public art collection."

Ms Wardman is one of a group of artists who have worked from Porthmeor Studios in St Ives, which date back to the early 1800s.

Falmouth Art Gallery curator Brian Stewart said he was particularly pleased that Ms Wardman's painting was an example of the work created in the studios, as the gallery was collecting work by distinguished artists from the studios.

Mr Stewart added: "We are delighted by Clare's generosity. She has given an important addition to the collection."

Visitors will also be able to see masterpieces by Waterhouse, Newton, and Opie, as well as The Animals Leaving the Ark: Mount Ararat by Filippo Palizzi, which has just returned to Falmouth after being on loan to the National Gallery, London.
