Date announced for annual hospice walk
Children's Hospice South West has announced that their annual event the BIG South West Walk will be taking place this year on June 14.
The BIG South West Walk gives supporters the chance to raise money for Children's Hospice South West by taking part in one or more of 84 walks, all on the same day, around the South West coastline, which runs for 630 miles from Minehead to Poole and has some spectacular scenery along the way for walkers to enjoy.
Children's Hospice South West has divided the BIG South West Walk into 84 sections of varying length, suitable for a wide range of abilities, so everyone can get involved.
One person who has taken part since this event started is 70-year-old John Bird from St. Austell, he said: "I am a very keen walker and love the outdoors having been a scouter since March 1947! When I saw that this event was being organised and for such a good cause I thought, that's for me, I'll do that.
He added: "I have 5 wonderful grandchildren and to think of all those sick children that I could help by raising money just by walking, I knew I just had to help. I walk with a group of friends every year now and last year I raised just under £900."
Community fundraiser for Cornwall, Mary Murfin said: "John has supported this event from the very beginning and not only that but last week John turned 70 and instead of presents John asked for donations to Children's Hospice South West which raised £110. We can't thank him enough for all of his support and generosity."
There will be four flagship routes across the South West coastline. The Cornwall flagship route this year is from Charlestown to Par (Polmear). This will take place at 11am on June 14.
To get involved people can register on-line at www.chsw.org.uk or call 01271 325270 to receive your BIG South West Walk information pack. There will be a £5 registration fee which covers administration costs, ensuring that all money raised goes towards helping more life-limited children across the South West.
There will also be prizes to be won for those people taking part. The prize for the person who raises the most money will be a night for 2 people at the Tregenna Castle Hotel in St. Ives! There will also be a children's photography/drawing competition with the chance to win a fantastic goodie bag plus a photography competition for amateur photographers taking part in the BIG South West Walk.
