It has been another year of success for vocational students at Truro College.

With IB results already known and ahead of A level results, attention at Truro College in this period is focused on the students, nearly 500 of them, who have just finished their two years of study on National Diploma courses. These vocational alternatives to A levels cover a wide range of subjects, from Art, Forensic Science, Business, Engineering and Health and Social Care to Sport, Public Services, Performing Arts and IT. The qualification is worth 3 A levels and increasing numbers of students are progressing successfully from these diplomas into university or related careers.

A record 118 students gained the highest possible score of three Distinction grades, an achievement which the university admissions system UCAS values as highly as three grade As at A level.

Director of Curriculum and Quality at Truro College, David Walrond, welcomed both the exceptional results and also the growing awareness and appreciation of advanced level vocational qualifications locally and nationally.

"I'm delighted that these courses and the excellent results here attract more and more interest each year. Many of these able and successful diploma students now moving on into higher education and careers would not necessarily have remained in education after secondary school and GCSEs if all that was on offer was a traditional academic pathway. There is a widely accepted need to encourage more students to engage with education and training post-16. The continuing growth in applications for these courses is one way in which we are addressing that need. The best ambassadors for National Diplomas are the students themselves and they fully deserve to have their achievements celebrated."
