Why pupil power is welcome at this school

Pupils at Polwhele House School, Truro, are enjoying an early taste of democracy thanks to a new "School Council" that is bubbling with new ideas for the benefit of all.

Once every four to six weeks, representatives from prep years 3 to 8 meet around the table in the headmaster's study with head Jo Mason and deputy head Dominic Floyd.

"They often take more notice of their peers than Dominic and myself!" admits Mr Mason. "This is just fine, as it encourages them to think about the way forward for the school and to identify new ideas and become involved in them."

The council members are currently busy planning a talent contest that will culminate in a stage show at the end of term.

Also in the offing are competitions, including "Pride In Our Class", and the formation of a new school dance club. The council is also addressing a number of day-to-day matters, such as bigger mirrors in the cloakroom.

An early council decision was that the school would benefit from the appointment of a head boy and girl. These - Robin Kirkham-Parry, of Tywardreath, and Kitty Byrne, of Truthan now sit on the council, along with one representative of each of the other prep years.

"The youngsters are encouraged to speak up and it's lovely to see them coming up with so many good ideas and initiatives of their own," says Mr Mason.

"The meetings last around 45 minutes and there is no shortage of input. Alas, sometimes we have to say no to the more ambitious suggestions. For instance, we won't be arranging an archaeological dig in the school grounds just yet; nor will we be organising a motor cycle scramble club for our pupils!"
