To commemorate the centenary of the commencement of World War I in 1914, the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organisation and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) are asking all vessels at sea on June 28 to fly flags and ensigns at half mast, to indicate mourning in remembrance of those who died in the conflict.
Vessels moored in port are encouraged to use a remembrance sound signal on the same day at 1700 hours UTC. This being the hour of the first shot fired in the war.
Crews are advised to seek advice from the relevant port authorities to confirm that the signal may be sounded.
