The first book I reviewed for the then Falmouth Packet, back in 1988, writes David Barnicoat, was West Country Cruising by Mark Fishwick. It became the definitive sailing guide for the waters of Cornwall, Devon, Dorset and the Isles of Scilly.
Launched this month is the long-awaited eighth edition of this hugely popular guide, now entitled West Country Cruising Companion.
This really is a superb publication for the serious yachtsman or yachtswoman. Crammed full of hundreds of beautiful, coloured photographs and detailed chartlets, the book is more than essential reading. Enhanced by stunning aerial pictures and a wealth of absorbing local history and general interest the author has written this book in a very relaxed style.
Mark, who was born in Exeter and brought up on the River Exe, is well-known in local waters as he lived in Falmouth for many years before moving back to Devon. During his career he has enjoyed a varying nautical life encompassing commercial fishing, charter skippering in the West Indies, yacht delivery, boatyard work, writing and photography. His gaff yawl Temptress built in Falmouth in 1910 and in which he has sailed thousands of miles, is now moored in the harbour.
Described as “the perfect on-board companion” the book has tidal charts, pilotage information, port guides and highly detailed information about the facilities offered in all of the ports.
Priced at £35, this hardback book, with 272 pages, comes highly recommended.
