• BUNKERING and ship repair activity has hit a low point as the port suffers a decline in commercial trade.

This month so far has seen a marked drop in ships arriving for bunkers. Only three ships are stemmed for bunkers in the next few days.

• AT A&P Falmouth the workforce have taken some holidays as the company suffers from a downturn in commercial shipping. All of the RFA Cluster ships are now at sea on military operations.

With world shipping markets in turmoil shipping companies are reluctant to spend money on ship repair until such times as the markets improve. The bulk carrier market is particularly hard hit with rates extremely low.

South east of Coverack four large bulk carriers remain at anchor awaiting orders.

• THE super yacht Dona Amelia is likely to remain at the docks for several weeks. It is understood that she is being sold.

The mega yacht Baton Rouge is dry-docked in number 3 dry-docks where A&P and Pendennis Shipyard staff are repairing the vessel.

• WORK is progressing on the rebuild of the Eastern oil terminal wharf. The jack-up rig Deep Diver is stacked off the old wharf pile driving.

• THE German sailing vessel Thor Heyerdahl has arrived from Horta, Azores after spending the winter in the Caribbean. She moored to the Caldy buoy to allow her students to go ashore.

Starting out from Germany the Thor Heyerdahl sails via the Canary Islands and Guatemala to Cuba and the United States, then back across the Atlantic Ocean to Wilhelmshaven, where they arrive after a six month cruise.

The students share responsibility for running the ship, live in a close–knit community together with the crew and teaching staff, have their school lessons on board.
