Swiss schooner due on Saturday

The Swiss registered, three-masted schooner Salomon is expected to spend a week moored in the harbour after arriving from the Azores.

Anne Oliver, the Falmouth Tall Ships Liaison Officer, spoke with the Salomon’s master on satellite phone earlier this week.

She said: “Salomon is expected here on Saturday. She is coming from Horta in the Azores. Myself and members of Nankersey Rowing Club will endeavour to take the students out gig rowing and arrange some other shore activities for them.”

The schooner is operated by the Sternen Youth Centre General Institution, Switzerland, who manage a crisis intervention and therapy programme for behaviourally disturbed teenagers.

Along with her sister vessel Ruach, a two-masted gaff rigged schooner, both ships provide learning facilities for these youngsters who can be placed on the ship for a minimum period of nine months.

Aboard ship they learn through experiential pedagogics or “education on the basis of experience.” The institute also runs three schooling and training centres, and a paragliding and scuba diving school – all of which work closely with the ships.
