The fire damaged container ship MSC Flaminia is being held 100 miles south west of Falmouth by salvage tugs as firefighting experts carry out an extensive survey of the ship and its cargo of containers.
Water from the firefighting operation has given the ship an 11 degree list. This is now contaminated water that has to be pumped out.
Smit, the salvage company in charge of the operation, will seek permission from the authorities to bring the ship to a sheltered area where in-depth investigations can be continued.
The 300-metre vessel, carrying 2,600 containers, suffered a fire resulting in an explosion that killed two crew members when she was in mid Atlantic.
The remaining crew and the body of the chief officer were brought to Falmouth by the tanker DS Crown.
Salvage tugs raced to the scene from Falmouth and Scotland. Fairmount Expedition, a powerful tug, has the MSC Flaminia under tow with the Anglian Sovereign and Cabo Magno carrying out firefighting duties.
