Trebah Garden in Mawnan Smith has teamed up with local artist Kim Zip to produce a suite of music inspired by the beauty, ambience and history of the valley.

During January and February Trebah will be hosting a very private view of Kim’s work, which will be available on mp3 player for visitors to enjoy, giving them the opportunity to experience each piece in the area of the garden which inspired its creation. The suite can be downloaded to a personal player or phone prior to visiting the garden (via the Sound Cloud), or for the less technically minded, MP3 players and headphones will be available to borrow, pre-loaded with the music and with simple instructions.

Kim, who works with the Fish Factory arts community at Falmouth Wharves, conceived the ‘Trebah Suite’ in the summer of 2012. Inspired by the sub-tropical surroundings, the artist approached Trebah with a concept for a musical suite, made up of improvised vignettes and programmed electronic music, and adding up to a complete sound-scape of the Gardens. The resultant work is the first artistic collaboration of 2013; and it heralds a packed year of cultural events at Trebah, to mark its 175th anniversary celebrations.

Kim said: “I was really pleased when Nigel and the team at Trebah agreed to work with me on a score for their beautiful garden. Trebah is a powerful place, and the atmosphere is so intense that to be honest the Suite scored itself. None of my musical impressions could ever be as beautiful as nature, but I hope the Trebah Suite will serve to remind everyone who knows and loves the garden of the wonderful experience of visiting.”

Director Nigel Burnett added: “This is a wonderful way for members and regular visitors to enjoy the garden with a bit of twist! The exhibition is free and combined with reduced winter entry rates and half price entry for National Trust members makes Trebah exceptional value for money at this time of year. Especially with the early arrival of some spring colour from the first to bloom Camellias, and many snow drops and other bulbs starting to show their heads.” Sharpclicks Records have released the Trebah Suite as ‘The Garden’ and it will be available for purchase after the close of the exhibition at all good online record stores.
