This May some of Cornwall’s finest artists and craftspeople will lift the veil on the Cornish art world, during Open Studios Cornwall from May 23 to 31.

The event brings together both new and longstanding artists with a mix of traditional and contemporary work and a broad range of disciplines, from sculpture to textiles and pottery.

Away from the tourist trail the Open Studios event allows you to meet the artists and craftspeople face to face, see them work and peek inside their studios – just look for the orange ‘O’.

In Falmouth look out for Sue Davis who from her base opposite The Greenbank Hotel produces abstract and experimental art with acrylic.

Nearby Charlotte Jones works from a converted chapel in Mabe Burnthouse from which she has stunning views of Falmouth Bay and beyond. These dramatic land and seascapes have inspired her ceramics, where layers of clay colour are thrown, coiled, scraped and burnished into shape, then high fired.

After gaining a Diploma from the Society of Botanical Artists, Julie Peart began producing watercolour paintings with a botanical focus. Her paintings and cards will be on show in her studio at The Cowshed in Mylor Bridge during the event.

Meanwhile in Helston, you can see the work of Catherine Hyde who uses images of hares, stags, owls, crows and fish in her work, as emblems of wildness and fertility. Catherine will preview her new children’s picture book The Tree of Constellations.

From their studios in Trenear near Helston, Yvonne and Peter Boex showcase dress design and sculpture. Peter makes abstract, surreal and figurative sculptures set in a colourful woodland garden, while Yvonne designs both casual and evening wear

Sue Templeman’s cottage overlooks the beautiful Mullion Cove where she produces seascapes and flowers using acrylic, collage, watercolour and pastels. There will be something for everyone at Sue’s studio - from cards and prints to original paintings.
