An exhibition at the Exchange celebrating 25 years of Penznace's Golowan festival is underway until June 27, and is featuring photographs, film footage and banners of previous year's midsummer fun.

The Golowan festival runs from June 19 to 28 and the Exchange’s exhibition is one of a whole host of events taking place in the town over this period.

Golowan has its roots in the traditional Feast of St John festival that once had many bonfires lit and large barrels of tar burned in celebration. In the late 1980’s this festival ceased from taking place because the risk to injury was perceived so great that the insurance became too expensive.

In 1991, however, Alverton School along with Kneehigh Theatre, Penwith Peninsular Project and Penzance Town Council revived this festival in the town in 1991 but trading the fires for processions such as the one on Mazey Day, and live music and markets.

All of the information about the events the Exchange is running throughout the festival can be found online on their website. Full Golowan festival details can also be found on the Golowan Festival Website.
