The Archives and Cornish Studies Service is celebrating Murdoch Day in Redruth this year with free family cartoon workshops inspired by Cornwall’s incredible inventors.

Led by Dandy and Beano cartoonist Nick Brennan, participants in the workshops will create their own wacky creation or amazing inventor inspired by historical anecdotes about Cornwall’s incredible scientists and engineers, and material on display from the service’s archive collections.

The materials on display include letters from Richard Trevithick and Humphry Davy, who apologises for being too busy with science to write to his friends, designs for Henry Trengrouse’s lifesaving apparatus, and material connected to lesser known inventors, such as Michael Loam and Richard Lower. William Murdoch, who lived in Redruth and who is the focus of the town’s celebrations, will, of course, also feature in the displays.

Chloe Phillips, the service’s learning lead, said: “We are delighted that our archive collections can inspire creative activities. We’re really looking forward to working with Nick again, and seeing the brilliant cartoons that participants produce inspired by Cornwall’s history of creativity and innovation.”

The workshops take place at the Cornish Studies Library in Alma Place, Redruth, on Saturday June 17 at 11am, 12pm and 1pm. Participants are welcome to drop in to whichever one suits them best.
