Cornwall’s premier Celtic festival, celebrating Cornish cultural identity and its links with the other Celtic nations, will return this weekend.

Lowender Peran will see dancers and musicians from the Celtic world will join Cornish folk in three days of concerts, singing sessions, ceilidhs, storytelling and dance displays. There are also a series of workshops and talks where you can learn a song in Cornish, try your hand at a highland fling or Irish step dance and explore some of the history behind Cornwall’s traditions.

Merv Davey, Cornish bard and one of organisers of Lowender Peran, said: “Mis Du, November in Cornish, meaning the dark month and beginning of winter, is time for a bit of fun and celebration.

“Lowender Peran is about enjoying and taking part in all things Cornish and Celtic, from Brass bands and choirs to the foot tapping jigs of Celtic bands and dance displays that out glamour TV’s Strictly.”

The festival will be held at the Hotel Bristol in Newquay, and events start with an informal ceilidh on Thursday evening. There will be workshops and displays throughout the day on Friday and in the evening the amazing Celtic Spectacular, with all the colour and costume of the Celtic dance groups.

Super Saturday is free entry during the day, with a chance for mum and dad to try out some real Cornish ales, and Saturday night is high energy dancing time with five foot tapping bands, and with Whisky tasting to set the mood.

There is free daytime entry on Sunday as well for the Cornish cultural expo, with stalls and entertainment throughout, and Sunday evening has the festival’s feature concert: bring your Cornish flags and vocal chords to this one. Newquay’s Oll an Gwella and the Mabe Ladies choir will set the singing scene, followed by Richard Trethewy and a special performance with Camborne town band, playing for Cornish Dancers Kemysk.

Newquay native Merv said: “The important thing about living in Cornwall, whether you are Cornish by birth or heart, is to enjoy the richness of our culture and the place to do it is the Bristol hotel November 2 to 5”.
