To celebrate St Piran’s Day and the publication of Not Forgetting the Whale by author John Ironmonger, Orion and some local bookshops in Cornwall are organising a series of parties on Thurs, March 5.
Not Forgetting the Whale is set in the fictional village of St Piran. John Ironmonger lived in Mevagissey as a teenager and his family still live there.
The St Piran's Day parties will be held in Waterstones, Truro (at 11.30am) The Falmouth Bookseller (3pm) and The Edge of the World Bookshop in Penzance (7pm). John will be doing a mini-tour of Cornwall to attend each party and the bookshops will very much be inviting the local community by offering prosecco and saffron cake to all comers.
Local libraries have also been getting involved by displaying posters and specially-designed showcards and handing out invitations to readers. The Reading Agency, a national charity, has been involving local bookgroups, who have been sent copies of 'Not Forgetting the Whale' and have also been invited to the parties. Each bookshop is doing a window display around St Pirans, with Waterstones Truro even putting out a specially designed cake by award-winning local company Mrs Peboryon’s Cake Emporium.
