It’s that time of year again when families pick up their cushions and head to Truro Cathedral for the choristers annual concert aimed at a younger audience. Everyone is welcome to the concert on Saturday, January 30, from 2.30 to 3.30pm, and it’s completely free.

The choristers, aged eight to 13, are one of the jewels in the crown of Cornwall’s arts scene, and their busy schedule for this term includes a live broadcast on BBC Radio 3 a few days after this concert.

Cathedral director of music Christopher Gray said: “The choristers rehearse every weekday morning before school and usually perform six times a week at services and sometimes concerts. The cushion concert is one of their favourite things in the year as it’s an opportunity to sing some lighter music in a more informal setting that usual. Don’t worry if you forget to bring a cushion as there are plenty of chairs available as well.”

The choristers themselves will introduce and perform a 45 minute programme of light classical and crossover pop-classical music to include Rutter’s For The Beauty of the Earth, and a moving folk song called The Turtle Dove. Gary Barlow’s Sing is certain to make an appearance, and their favourite song is Can You Feel the Love Tonight from The Lion King, with words by the choir’s patron, Sir Tim Rice.

Everyone is welcome and there is no charge for admission. The concert is aimed primarily at families, and children are encouraged to bring a cushion and sit up at the front, right in front of the choristers who will wear their distinctive red choir cassocks. At the end, children will have the opportunity to spend 15 minutes learning a song with the choristers, which they will then perform to round things off.
