Shallal Sketchbooks is an exciting project and series of exhibitions developed in partnership with Falmouth Art Gallery and Falmouth Library that encourages everyone to engage with art.

The innovative two year project celebrates art and stories, connecting people and places. Free sketchbooks have been distributed for artists of all ages to use creatively and then exhibit at partner venues.

The project starts and ends in Falmouth, connecting people worldwide through their sketchbooks, with the completed work ultimately being added to the archives at Falmouth Library for future years to enjoy.

The first exhibition of 2017 will be held at Falmouth Art Gallery during half term week, February 13 to 18, where Shallal Sketchbooks will be showing and sharing the growing library of artists' sketchbooks.

Victoria Hodgkinson, project co-ordinator, said: “With our partners we have been giving free sketchbooks to those who would like to join the creative journey and the response has been wonderful. This is the first exhibition of 2017 and we plan to take the project on tour to schools, libraries, community groups and festivals.“

Artist Amanda Slade added: “Being involved in Shallal's lovely sketchbook project has helped me to re-connect with the gathering and collecting of ideas process and reminded me just how important sketchbooks can be.”

Jo Willis, Shallal’s creative director, said: “We are thrilled to have this exciting partnership with Falmouth Art Gallery and see the Sketchbooks expand. It can become an important part of Cornwall’s cultural heritage and enables everyone to get involved.”

Inspiring art for everyone, the project's participants range from five to 70 plus and are from Cornwall to as far as South Africa and India. The exhibition in Falmouth provides a chance to browse the collection and take part in the project.

Shallal is an innovative local inclusive arts charity and has been pioneering accessible arts for many years. With a dance theatre company at it's centre, Shallal today offers visual arts residencies, workshops and community groups.
