National Trust Trelissick is celebrating 100 years of women’s suffrage by screening the film Suffragette and hosting a talk about Ida Copeland, former owner of Trelissick and one of the earliest women to join parliament.

Suffragette is an intense drama that tracks the story of the foot soldiers of the early feminist movement as they fought for the right to vote. Maud Watts (Carey Mulligan) is one such foot soldier. Galvanized by political activist Emmeline Pankhurst (Meryl Streep), Watts joins a diverse group of women who fight for equality and the right to vote.

Faced with increasing police action, Maud and her dedicated suffragettes must play a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse, risking their jobs, homes, family and lives for a just cause. The story of her fight for dignity is both heart-breaking and inspirational.

The National Trust is running a year-long programme called Women and Power which celebrates the lives and work of some remarkable women who lived in our special places.

At Trelissick, the National Trust is telling the story of Ida Copeland MP, one of the most remarkable owners of the estate.

The filming and talk take place on August 29. Doors will open at 7.15pm with the film starting at 7.45pm. There will be a bar and nibbles.

Tickets can be bought from the Cornish Riviera Box Office.
