A Falmouth fish and chip shop owner has intention of hanging around the "plaice," with plans to run next year's London Marathon.

This will be the second successive marathon for Helen Kurdyla of the Gem Fish Bar, who is once again running for Falmouth's branch of the RNLI.

Helen said: "When we lived in the city the RNLI wasn't really known. When we came down here we realised what a massive charity it is. Being by the sea you never really know when you might need their help."

She also has a personal reason for supporting the charity, as her 15-year-old daughter Gabrielle, a keen sailor, once had to be rescued by lifeguards after getting stuck on her surfboard at Gwithian.

To raise funds for the charity, which will go towards her running total, Helen and her family are holding a fun afternoon at the fish bar.

There will be karaoke with prizes and competitions including coin rolling to win a bottle of Champagne.

All the money raised through a grand raffle will be matched by Barclay's Bank.

Prizes have been donated by businesses in the area, with the first prize of bed and breakfast at the Bosanneth Guest House in Melvill Road, Falmouth.

Tickets for the event, which takes place from 3pm on Sunday, November 22, cost £5 and are on sale at the fish and chip shop.
