THE YUE RESTAURANT, Truro

The thing about writing a meal review is that you have to show balance, be critical but fair, show good with bad. But what happens if you just have a fantastic meal, with delicious food and a charming, friendly host and honestly have nothing bad to say? Well, you’re about to find out.

The Yue Restaurant is the new offering from the owners of The City Wok in New Street, Truro. A chance to enjoy freshly prepared Chinese food in a relaxed|restaurant setting.

Offering a huge array of dishes as well as beers and spirits – we got stuck in with a sharing platter. Here you get to select which four items you want from the starter selection. There is everything from stuffed crab claws to light and crispy wonton. Piping, hot, nicely presented and every bit as |delightful to eat – we quickly learned that we were going to need to pace ourselves.

My husband had ordered a Tsingtao beer to go with his meal – declaring it light and refreshing - it was the ideal complement to the sticky ribs, sesame prawn toast, wonton and satay that made up our starter. Now the highlight here was undoubtedly the peanut sauce that accompanied the satay – I literally had to stop my husband licking the bowl clean...

On to the sizzling main courses - for him mixed seafood with ginger and for me, beef with cashew and sharing mixed meat special fried rice (which was a meal in itself). I watch with envy as my husband’s meal arrived - looking amazing with monkfish, scallops and king prawns – I am allergic to scallops, sigh. However, my beef and cashew more than made up for this – packed with succulent meat, plenty of nuts and a light but flavoursome sauce.

Discussing our dishes we both happened upon what made our meals so enjoyable. Sometimes when you have a Chinese meal you are left with one flavour – but in each of our dishes every flavour was discernible. Whether it be a spring onion or a cashew nut, each texture and flavour was clear, rounded nicely by its sauce. It is fair to say we were won over. (We even asked for the take-away menu when we left!).

When our delightful (and knowledgeable) host Carrie suggested dessert we believed we were beaten. However she assured us it was not to be missed. Out came a slice of cake to share – well I say cake, it was more like heaven-flavoured cloud. What started as an ‘after you dear’ sharing experience turned quickly into a spoon fight to the death... well maybe not that dramatic but close...

So on reflection can I think of anything critical? Not really other than the timer on the light in the toilet ran out while my husband was still inside... I just considered that entertainment!

So what about the nitty gritty details? Well, parking is nearby at Moorfield (just behind Mallets) with the restaurant being just a short walk away (the perfect starting point for any night out). There are some excellent special offers available such as three-courses for £8.95 if you dine between 5pm to 7pm (restricted menu) or spend £35 and get a free bottle of wine – how many more reasons do you need?
