IF you love folk music you are in for a treat as three of the UK’s best acts, Lau, Spiro and Siobhan Wilson come together at Hall For Cornwall this May.

Headlining the evening is Lau, three highly individual and extremely gifted musicians who are regarded as the epicentre of the new folk boom.

Lau comprises Martin Green (accordion and electronics) Aidan O’Rourke (fiddle, fx) and Kris Drever (vocals, guitars) and for a decade the trio has been stretching folk music’s |boundaries further and exploring new musical territory with each release and concert tour.

The band has not only become one of the great success stories of the last decade, but a “barometer of the fast-changing and increasingly all-embracing face of British folk music” encompassing fresh and varied musical influences and styles including rock and jazz improvisation.

Spiro, a four-piece ensemble from Bristol is one of the most exciting quartets you’re likely to hear – creating seemingly |impossibly intricate and an astonishing live experience playing a range of instruments from violin, mandolin, accordion to piano, |guitar and cello.

This contemporary acoustic ensemble first came together through Bristol’s folk sessions scene in 1993, trading under the name of The Famous Five.

This highly imaginative and highly disciplined group offers a sound that is unified but never uniform. Creating intricate, harmonious yet energetic music.

The band is known for its |dramatic soundscapes which are sometimes compared with the work of Steve Reich, Michael Nyman and the Penguin Café Orchestra, yet still a unique sound of their own.

Despite a number of works for theatre, film and television, Spiro are still relatively unknown but will be an undeniably fabulous addition to the night’s entertainment.

Also on the line-up is singer-songwriter Siobhan Wilson who has been captivating audiences around the country with her perfectly controlled, honey sweet vocal ability and her exceptional prowess on both piano and guitar. Hailing from Glasgow, Siobhan cites Nina Simone, John Martyn and Perfume Genuis among her influences and has recently toured with Willy Mason. Lau with Spiro and Siobhan Wilson will be at Hall For Cornwall on May 23 at 7.30pm.
