Ska legend, Neville Staple, is making his way down to Penzance to perform tracks off his latest album, Ska Mad, in Sound Nightclub on July 10.

Neville has grown up with reggae music and when a young boy joined the sound system scene with his brother in London before moving to Coventry, where he joined ska band the Specials.

Still on the scene and producing some great tracks under the name, Original Rude Boy, Neville’s music has remained as politically conscious as that of the Specials, while still keeping his sounds fun, funky and danceable.

Ska Mad raises issues of poverty, inequality and youth gang culture, most notably with track: Road Block, which is as much a critique on the social situation that gives rise to youth gang culture as it is a playful heads-up to kids on what they are getting themselves into when turning to a life of crime.

Neville said:

“Road Block, a lot of people say the video is shot like the Specials, but, to be honest with you, what this song is about is a social issue: the kids growing up in the area (of Coventry). The video was shot by a young lad, he approached me and said: "he liked Road Block because it is about what is happening with us kids at the minute.”

Neville continued: “I don’t want to preach to anything, though. My nights are about having a good time.”

Tickets are £15.00 and are available from eventbrite.co.uk and soundpenzance.com.
