Cuban salsa band Son Yambu are the latest addition to this year’s St Ives September Festival lineup and will play at the Guildhall on Sunday, September 9.

The UK-based group hail mostly from Santiago de Cuba, which is the birthplace of son Cubano; a traditional fusion of Spanish guitar music with African rhythms.

They represent a new generation of artists who are passionate about keeping the traditions of Cuban music alive and continuing the legacy of Buena Vista.

The band will also be holding a participatory workshop before the show, providing an opportunity for festival goers to learn about their authentic brand of son Cubano salsa music.

Mary English, chairman of St Ives September Festival, said: “We’re very excited to be welcoming Son Yambu to this year’s Festival.

“Last year a number of people told us they would like to see dance at the Festival and Son Yambu are offering the chance not only to watch but to learn and take part.”

A spokesman said: “Playing their irresistible tropical rhythms, Son Yambu bring their audiences a truly sensational, authentic Latin-music experience. Their music is guaranteed to turn any event into a fiesta.”

Son Yambu, who recently released their debut CD La Maravilla, are being brought to the September Festival by Carn to Cove, Cornwall’s performing arts scheme for rural communities.

The St Ives September Festival will run from Saturday September 8 until Friday September 21 and has confirmed a lineup of acts including sea shanty singers Fisherman’s Friends and folk musician Seth Lakeman.
