A 'live documentary' of the man cited as one of Bob Dylan's earliest influences is coming to Constantine.

The life of Woody Guthrie is being brought to the stage at The Tolmen Centre by singer, multi-instrumentalist and professor of American literature and culture, Will Kaufman.

The world's leading expert on Woody Guthrie, Will is the author of the first political biography of the legendary American balladeer, and has two more books forthcoming: Woody Guthrie’s Modern World Blues (Illinois) and Woody Guthrie: Down, Up or Anywhere (Reaktion).

Most recently, it was Will who unearthed Woody's previously unpublished lyrics condemning his Brooklyn landlord, Fred Trump, father of Donald, for his racist rental policies.

Unlike other academics, Will does not just report his findings in books. He specialises in 'live documentaries' in which he explains the life and times of Woody Guthrie, illustrated by songs.

Woody Guthrie: Hard Times and Hard Travelin’ sets Woody’s songs in the context of the American 1930s with such hard-hitting songs as Vigilante Man, Pretty Boy Floyd and I Ain't Got No Home. The songs are brought into conversation with other relevant songs, blending music and radical politics to mark Woody's most powerful work.

Will Kaufman’s Woody Guthrie Show will be at The Tolmen Centre, Constantine on Sunday, November 6 at 7.30pm.

Tickets cost £11, £10 for concessions, £5 for children, and are available from the box office on 01326 341353, or online at tolmencentre.co.uk.
