MY name is Pat Carr and I lived in Falmouth from 1964-2004. From 1986-2004 I held the position of Director of Care for the Mencap Society in Falmouth.

The reason I am writing is that a very special lady, who firstly was a volunteer has died.

Mrs Betty Levick passed away on September 28 at Treliske Hospital.

Her passing will not only be a great loss to her family and friends, but also to the Falmouth community and in particular the Mencap organisation. Betty truly was an unsung hero and I know would have not wanted any formal recognition for the great contribution that she made, in the early days, to the successful project at Mencap House, 37 Kimberley Park Road.

For many years Betty was a volunteer, her main contribution was to cook a hot meal in her home, transport it to the venue, serve and clear away every day of the week for up to 20 residents.

Once she had cleared away she would stay for several hours participating in all the afternoon activities. When Mencap moved to their own premises she became an employee preparing the lunch, driving the mini bus and dressmaking for the famous shows. Nothing was ever too much trouble and without her input, love and care, the special atmosphere that was is the day centre, would never have got off the group.

Betty will be in our thoughts and of all those connected with Mencap for a very long time to come.
