WITH the closure of the front desk at Falmouth police station now confirmed by the Conservative Crime and Police Commissioner Tony Hogg, what better time to call for the scrapping or 'closure' of Police Commissioner himself - or at least his office.
Every year £1.8m is spent propping up a police commissioner who barely anybody has even heard of or know what his job is. The turnout at the first police commissioner elections in 2012 was just 15 per cent - hardly a ringing endorsement from the public.
More to the point the £1.8m wasted every year on the commissioner would pay the wages of an additional 94 beat bobbies - something that could make a real difference to Falmouth and elsewhere in Cornwall. Who knows perhaps even one or two might even have been able to man the desk at Falmouth police station.
