WITH reference to the headline last week “Rival Homes Plan Revealed”, I would like to raise a few points.

People need somewhere to live and not all existing properties can be economically renovated.

However, is that justification to build on high grade agricultural land? Has there been any attempt to build on brown field sites in and around Helston?

Given that agricultural land is significantly cheaper than building land, should the council not be asked for more than 40 per cent affordable housing? Certainly if 40 per cent is decided upon then that figure should not at any stage be reduced. It will need more than a section 106 agreement, as those can be dispensed with when a slightly different permission is sought.

The application site borders the white elephant that is called Helston Business Park. When the housing development swallows that area as well, at least the council’s embarrassment at Helston’s most expensive dog walking area will be erased.

As well as finding homes for this burgeoning population, we need to remember that we will need to feed that population.

Still, if developers can build on green fields, presumably that gives us all carte blanche to do as we like with regards to planning.
