I feel I must respond to your anonymous correspondent in October 29 issue ‘More should be done to make Helston prosper.’ I just hate these people who have so much criticism of others without appending their name to their remarks.

Your correspondent criticises the Helston Town Council for wasting time and money in the discussion about a gifted photograph. This discussion took place entirely with the people of Helston in mind and was a matter that could not be just ignored.

Then he/she goes on to blaming the town council for allowing Wetherspoons to come to Helston; well such matters are not ultimately decided by the town council, they are merely consultants in the planning process. They can only comment constructively based on their own observations and on fact brought before them by the local people.

It is the county council who has the final “say” on such matters and if there is no legal reason why an application should not meet with approval they have to grant it.

I wonder if your correspondent would like to estimate what an appeal by Wetherspoons would cost the rate payer? It is so easy to “knock” a body like the council at the best of times and it’s easier still if you don’t consider all the facts.

Finally, I note that the writer has appreciated, following “recent trips out” how “buoyant Falmouth is looking.” And how Penzance seems to have a good range of shops and is on the up. However, he/she didn’t notice that both Falmouth and Penzance have a Wetherspoons! Need I say any more?
