HELSTON Town Council are attempting to petition Cornwall Council to have the parking regulations for Bank Holiday Mondays relaxed, and brought in line with Sunday parking rules. Many town and parish councils have supported this as it is something that affects the county as a whole, and affects not only locals, but tourists, of which every town and parish has an interest.

Unfortunately Mullion Parish Council will not support this, despite Helston being the gateway to the Lizard and Mullion's nearest town. They state they are reluctant to get involved with anything that does not directly affect the parish, they also state no other electors contacted them apart from myself.

I pointed out that the only reason I was aware, was that I attend the Helston Town Council meetings, and I presume that other electors were either unaware, or would expect Mullion Parish Council to support the interests of their electorate with something like this, regardless of whether or not contact was made. We are lucky in Mullion, in as much as we rarely experience any parking enforcement patrols and additionally have two free car-parks.

However, many of the residents that Mullion Parish Council are supposed to represent, do actually leave the village from time to time, and therefore could benefit elsewhere in the county from a potential change in Bank Holiday Monday parking rules.

There is nothing to say the petition will be successful, however, I give credit to all those town and parish councils, that for the benefit of the residents they represent, are willing to try, including St Keverne Parish Council, who are forward thinking enough to support Helston Town Council in their effort.
