ALL through my childhood and before, the council was debating the closure of the street to traffic. Then it was decided that only the middle bit, from The Grapes Pub up to St George's could apply, with self-appointed 'watchers' taking note of people's car number if they broke the rule, of only being able to drive through if you were going to park at The Old Gas Works.

About 30 years ago I wrote a letter to the Packet and the council saying that I had lived in Poole in Dorset, which has a similar layout to Falmouth - the main street running parallel to the sea. They had pedestrianised their main street, delivery lorries arriving before 10am, I think it was or maybe earlier.

There were barriers across either end and no one bothered to look at this example. It seems to me all sensible suggestions have been ignored and the council has its own agenda in these matters and will not listen to public opinion.

The other suggestion I put at the same time was using the end site of the Moor where the fancy dress shop is now as a multi-storey car park, the precedent having been set by The Western National Bus company whose depot was there years ago. I'm sure Iceland could find an alternative site in the town.

When it was Tall Ships in 1998 traffic was directed to come down Kimberley Park road and leave by going up Killigrew, so virtually a one-way system.

The car park would only need to be a couple of storeys high to provide huge amounts of car space, which would be on the level walking into town, seeing that people used the distance from the town of the Quarry car park and the existence of Quarry Hill as too far and too steep to walk to. Also ideal parking for going to the cinema.

The answer I received at the time was that it would present practical difficulties because of the landlords who owned a lot of these shops, who I believe was the line of The Lord Kimberley.

I read his obituary in the Daily Telegraph and felt so sad that he never ever visited the town and led a dissolute life .and yet his name is revered here .

Well, rank should be no precursor from being compulsorarily purchased.

I even suggested a drawing of how it would look with flower beds on the outside etc.

So to summarise - cars came down Kimberly Park Road, into the car park on their right and exited out the other side, turning right to go up Killigrew to leave the town. Alternatively they would turn left up Quarry Hill to park. Massive amounts of parking for all occasions - sorted.
