The shocking injustice inflicted on Jamie Streets and his family, facing homelessness under the rules for entitlement to council accommodation, is a sad reflection of the shame which we should all feel.

Decisions to deny such deserving citizens as the Streets family of Falmouth are carried out in our name, under rules drafted by officials and clerks, yet agreed by politicians at various levels of elected governments who give their approval.

This is not a party issue, but a people's one. One which concerns us all.

Whilst we in our justified anger and outrage seek to blame others, including housing officials for the disgraceful decision to deny that Falmouth family the council accommodation which they rightfully deserve, we should ourselves accept our shares of responsibility for such injustices and humiliation dished out to that family, as well as to many others whose fathers and husbands have served honourably in HM Forces, yet who are denied accommodation in our name.

We should hang our own heads in disgrace, as we ask ourselves what we have done to ensure that such injustices were not done away with, decades ago.

While we're about it, we owe our grateful thanks to our free press and media, whose journalists drew attention to the plight of that lovely Falmouth family to whose brave dad and husband, we all owe so much.

Yours sincerely,
Lomond Handley
