I don’t know why Mr Collett is having a go at me (letters, March 11). I was born in Falmouth 70 years ago, I used to catch smelt at Greenbank, I also used to catch dabs and mullet and bass off of coastlines, used to pick cockles over Sailors Creek and have caught chad at Custom House Quay.
I then watched the cockles and fishing decline over the next 50 years and the oyster beds along Penryn River disapear.
Now I can’t say if it was due to dredging or not but Penryn River is pretty lifeless now, but the River Fal with all its mine waste is still fishing well, so perhaps all the PBs and lead over the years has not helped Penryn River or the harbour.
So go ahead and dredge and finish it off completely. I can understand why the MMO want to get it right; all over the world the environment has been compromised.
