I attended the Helston Town Council meeting yesterday evening, amongst the members of public was the captain of Culdrose. Captain Orchard spoke about the idea of having the Freedom of Helston parade bi annual as opposed to the current annual.

The captain gave some very good reasons for the proposal and raised some very valid points. I was however surprised that it was met with a response of disagreement from certain councillors. Councillor Justine Hornsby did however support the idea, and I think she was right in doing so.

However, the captain having listened to comments from a minority of councillors, very kindly and politely withdrew the proposal, and said Culdrose would continue to have the freedom parade yearly. Consequently the opinions by councillors were not actually put to a vote, nor will be, I think it is a great shame this proposal will not be voted on. Furthermore, I believe the lack of support by some councillors, for the captain of Culdrose, did not reciprocate the support that Culdrose and indeed the captain, has shown Helston and the town council now and in the past. It is always promoted that Culdrose and Helston, which includes its town council, work together for the good of all. It would seem to me that is becoming a little unfairly balanced in the favour of Helston Town Council. Personally, I believe any reasonable request from Culdrose should be supported, particularly in times of austerity and a changing world.
