Dear sirs
I write as a concerned parent, Falmouth resident and local GP regarding the threatened closure of Ships and Castles leisure facility.
As a parent of three young children we use the pool most weeks as a family, and the boys attend Tempus' swim-school weekly. I consider the opportunity for our children to learn how to swim essential in a coastal environment such as Cornwall.
As a local GP I regularly refer patients to the supervised Gym sessions - which is important in managing a number of chronic diseases and helps with primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease, and promoting healthy lifestyles.
I would ask the council to justify the proposed closure balancing the needs of local residents vs fiscal responsibility. An alternative local facility would be required so as not to disadvantage those who would rely on public transport to access other council facilities - closing the only public pool in Falmouth would add to costs for accessing alternative venues.
I would also ask that the petition started by staff at Tempus leisure is given greater opportunity to run in order to allow the various users of facilities to air their views. There has been a short lead time to the council meeting and no form of meaningful public consultation and a cynic could argue this is done deliberately to remove resident's democratic right to challenge any proposed closure.
Yours Faithfully,
