I quote from the Falmouth Packet of November 25.

'Custom House Quay and the close surrounding area is steeped in history and, as such, this heritage must be protected at all costs.'

Whilst I applaud the interest currently being shown in the quay, vis a vis the Falmouth Haven plans, are we not missing something here? Spend ten minutes to wander around and look at the area and its environs. You will see metal advertising hoardings clamped to the railings (and no doubt more to come). Random sheds and a fast food trailer on the quay. A rather shabby shelter. No less than 14 scaffold poles around the seaward perimeter (currently with fairy lights). Cars parked all over the quay. Huge and ugly pay and display signs. Cages of rubbish, cardboard, assorted stock, beer kegs and associated items overflowing from business premises.

I can't help feeling that, by comparison, the proposed pontoons would have less of an impact on the area than the hideous 'development' that has been allowed to take place on the quay itself.

I walk in this area on a regular basis, two or three times a week. I rarely, if ever, see ny activity on the boats that are 'either tied to the walls or against each other in a seemingly ad hoc manner' (Historic England - Simon Hickman). Is this partly because access to these boats on outhauls is quite difficult? Some of them look quite forlorn, neglected and almost derelict. Pontoon access for local boat owners of small boats would be easier and also make more use of the centre to the basin. More boating activity would result, more for people to watch.

Is it not possible to make Custom House Quay and basin a far more attractive amenity for boat owners and importantly for non boat owners, who would appreciate a pleasant area to stroll, sit, relax, watch the world go by and enjoy the view whilst being close to the water.

Banish the cars, the exhaust fumes, and all that detracts from this area. Refurbish the shelter, maybe add another. Set out some planters, hanging baskets on traditional lamp standards and provide a few more seats and picnic tables.

Custom House Quay is often referred to as the gem of Falmouth water front. Are we really 'protecting this heritage at all costs'?

It could be a gem that sparkles again for locals and visitors to enjoy. An amenity for us all to be proud of.
