Network Rail have advised that they will be cutting down the six large Scots Pines, which have stood proud on the Melvill Road/Bar Line stretch of the Falmouth to Truro Branch Line for probably a hundred years. The rail company has provided only seven days notice of the removal which is due to take place on Monday, February 29.

The trees, which are sister trees to those in the grounds of Falmouth Hotel, are beautiful specimens and give great ground cover to wildlife, and valuable nesting sites for birds. Sensible husbandry could easily save these trees, rather than the felling, which will leave a huge scar in an area of outstanding natural beauty.

Anyone who passes this stretch either by train or road, will only realise the importance of these trees to this area once they have gone – which is why I would urge you to help save these trees, by contacting Patricia Agbarakwe, Community Relations Executive at Network Rail on 03457 11 41 41 or email stakeholderrelations@networkrail.co.uk Quoting reference FAL3 312M 35C-312M 50C.
