IT was heartening to hear that the British National Party gained fewer votes in the South West than in any other region.
Although they hailed their victory in winning two seats in the North of England, they scored no more votes than they did the last time. Their success was due to Labour voters defecting to the Conservatives or merely staying at home.
Those who voted for the BNP should be aware that they are travelling down a sinister road, under the shadow of the Swastika, the Holocaust and other evils that vile sign engendered.
It’s ironic that only a few days ago we celebrated the D-Day Landings. The young men who died on the beaches and in the battles that followed did so to rid the world of the evils of fascism.
BNP supporters can be identified with Oswald Mosley’s British Union of Fascists, who were interned during the war. These 21st century fascists, too, may be suspect of their loyalty to what some of us are proud to call British. Some of us have long memories.
